The teaser! The title! The awkward silence!

Wednesday, September 2nd, 2009 by Andrew

You know that movie that I directed this summer? The one that most of you were involved with in some way? The one you thought was called Political Justice? That’s not what it’s called. It’s called Discouraging Words, and here’s a teaser trailer:

For more viewing options (including 1080p, for the videophiles!), check out discouragingwords.com.

About a week into production I made the laughable claim that we would have a teaser by the end of week 2. Obviously, that didn’t happen—although in my defense, it wasn’t for lack of material. We could have cut a teaser from only the footage we got in the first week, but by ‘we’ I mean ‘somebody who isn’t me,’ and… well… that person didn’t exist. But the past is behind us, that that is a pretty awesome teaser, if I do say so myself.

Still having trouble adjusting to that title? Discouraging Words? Say it to yourself. Discouraging Words. Let it roll around your mouth. It wasn’t my idea, but it is the perfect title, and I’ll tell you how I arrived there. (more…)

This is not a production update

Hello dear friends,

I know, it’s been over a month since my last post. I’ve been a neglectful blogger, and for that I apologize. Now, zooming down Interstate 25 at just slightly over the posted speed limit of 75 miles per hour (but not driving while typing, don’t worry), I am suddenly presented with about two hours of unscheduled free time. Let me tell you a little about what I’ve been doing lately.

The cost of a terabyte

Thursday, June 11th, 2009 by Andrew

Today I got my brand-new 1-terabyte (1,000 gigabyte) external hard drive in the mail—bought in order to store and edit the Political Justice footage. I paid about $110 for it, including shipping. I remember a few years ago when I was interning at Channel 10 and they got their first terabyte drive, my boss looked up how much a terabyte would have cost in years gone by. I couldn’t remember those numbers, so out of curiosity, I did a little research and calculated the cost of a terabyte in years past (via Cost of Hard Drive Space):

2004: $1,000
1999: $27,400
1989: $12 million
1984: $80 million
1956: $10 billion

Granted, the very idea of a terabyte would have been ludicrous in 1956, when only one magnetic hard disk existed, with a storage capacity of 5 megabytes and a production cost of $10,000 (in 1956 dollars). Still, hypothetically, a terabyte would have cost $10 billion 53 years ago. Inflation-adjusted, that’s $78.4 trillion—enough to pay for the federal bailout more than six times over.

And now I’ve got two of ‘em in my living room.

Casting has gone swimmingly so far and we’ve had a lot of smart, talented people come in and read silly things off of pieces of paper. Someday I will tell you more but now, I sleep.

Frantic scribbles

Wednesday, May 13th, 2009 by Andrew

So I’ve started doing some preliminary revisions to the script. Not a full draft yet, just some quick fixes. Going through my current draft and reading the notes, I found this notation in the margin of page 86:

TOO MUCH WORDS! HEAD HURTS!

…so I’m working on that.

On a somewhat related topic, I will be back in Fort Collins TOMORROW! I will be making phone calls and hope to be receiving them as well because that is the point of what phones do: sometimes you dial them, and sometimes they just ring on their own. It’s sort of poetic, in a not-so-poetic sort of way.
